CR001 - Better Data Segmentation

Suggestion:

Change systems and processes to enable Member Groups to be able to contact their chosen specific sub-sections of their members directly - using better segmented member data.

It is acknowledged that direct access to email addresses is against BCS data protection policy and is not requested.

Members should be able to say which MG they want contact with, why and how. A few MGs I want full involvement and they can have a range of contact details. Some MGs I want to know about everything they do as email reminders only. other MGs I only need to see event reminders. some MGs don’t need to contact at all.

Agree, but as Chair of Data Management SG suggest that awareness of the quality of existing data is gained as part of the planning process to avoid time-consuming/ expensive challenges

It is essential for branches

It is essential for branches and specialist groups to be able to address their members effectively. Broadcast emails are all very well, but for a message to be effective it must be tailored to its audience, hence segmentation is necessary.

MGWG suggestions

As a member of the working party, I am in support of all the suggestions and believe they will fundamentally improve our engagement with members and thus the value of BCS membership and their retention. Having been a member for very many years including volunteering at both central and local levels I believe they represent what is possible.

Emails should be tagged with group and role labels, so that if I want to email all members of the local branch committee, I select the target distribution labels to be Local branch >> Committee members and then send. Or select a specific SG >> events notification, etc. No need to know the email addresses involved.

REFER - Can't see the point

REFER - Can't see the point to this? What Member Sub-Groups? Apart from perhaps Specialist groups I cannot see why a Branch would only want to contact part of its membership? Meeting attendees can be done by the Booking App and Committee via that group. What else is there?

Thanks for taking the time to

Thanks for taking the time to comment Len.

I appreciate that some member groups may not want to sub-divide their membership, being happy with the 'send to all' functionality that is available today.

However, most that I have spoken to do - to make contact more focused and personal.

I guess it depends what you are trying to achieve, but certainly if we want to contact/analyse different demographics to make the member group membership experience more personal and relevant to the individual we need better data/systems than we have at present.
