As a member, I’d rather renew automatically than have to chose each year - elsewhere I have been a member of an organisation that required a positive opt in and it was unnecessary admin. There needs to be real benefit for the members to make this worthwhile.

AGREE, but not something I feel particularly strongly about. It would need to be easy for the member and suspect many would not bother.

While I agree with this, what is the action/result if a member takes no action with regards the reminder - do they become "branchless" or do they remain with their current Branch?
I would recommend the latter, with the reminder serving as a useful reminder to members to review which branch(es) they are associated to...people do move from time-to-time and it may be useful to remind them.
Suggest when the reminder is sent out, it also lists their nearest branches and highlights which one(s) (if any) they are assigned to. Might be worth also reminding them of the address BCS has for them on file in case they have forgotten to notify a change of address?

But only if they stay with their existing selection if they choose not to respond. I think even just asking people to do this, plus providing them with information about what other options are out there, and perhaps asking them to think about what member persona they are and if that has changed (in which case the groups they get benefit from may have changed) will be a good way of encouraging people to stay engaged with the BCS and its benefits.

Agree on a reminder, showing options available and that inaction doesn't mean 'branchless' or you risk losing alot of potentially active members.
